1860年：ヨークシャーのリーズでベンジャミン・ウェイド氏によって設立。
1945年：第二次世界大戦の空爆でリーズの工場は焼失。ロンドンにも生産拠点を増やします。
1962年：ニューヨークのレーン社のに買収されます。（チャラタンもレーンに買収）
1965年：リーズ工場の閉鎖（戦後も製造は行っていたようです）
1971年：デンマークパイプ作家のプレーベン・ホルム氏が自社工房の商標としてベンウェイドを引継ぐ。
1978年：ロンドン工場はダンヒルに売却。
1982年：ロンドン工場の閉鎖。
1989年：プレーベン・ホルム氏が逝去。ベンウェイドのブランドは終了しました。
1998年：Wilson(Duncan Briars)がダンヒルから商標を得る。Pipediaによると製造はParker Hardcastle

こぶりなアップルベントのシェイプです。
・全長:130mm・高さ40mm
・外径:37mm・内径:19mm・深さ35mm
・重量:40g
背面に独特のカーブのふくらみがあり、グリップ感はとても良いです。
しかし、全般的に強くバフがかかっており、ロゴが認識が難しい。
クロスグレインで両側面のバーズアイが広く美しい模様を生み出しています。
ルーペで何とかロゴのベンジャミン氏を発見。
外観：5
感触：2(咥え心地)、4(エアコントロール)
味：4(バージニア)
VPを中心に吸っていますが、酸味・甘味が柔らかく感じる旨いパイプです。。
悲しいかな、ダボがゆるく、オリフィックのリップも削れて咥え心地が厳しいです。
高いベントですが煙道はスムースで、ほとんど熱くならないのに、気づいたら灰になっている事が多いです。

Ben Wade Leeds Small bent apple
A little history from Jacques Cole: "There is evidence that Ben Wade was initially a wholesaler who founded his firm in Leeds in 1860 and very soon started makeing his own briar pipes; initially, it was a question of fitting and finishing, as bowl turning did not take place on a large scale in England until the 20th century. In any event, Ben Wade had connections with St Claude where supplies of pipes were obtained: the compny gained a respected reputation in the Midlands and the North which were its main areas of operation. Details are unfornately vague as to the extent of business, but the wholesale side was quite important. In pipes, the firm concentrated on the popular price market, only stamping its better qualities Ben Wade.The production was a number of well-made pipes mostly in medium to small sizes which were favoured by the northern pipe smokers up to the 1960s. The level of production was relatively small and right up to the second world war, Ben Wade was ordering popular series from St Claude and was visited regulary by the larger manufactures from France, who incidentally were British - owned ! "
The Leeds factory was bombed and destroyed in WWII. The company reopened in London, and the brand then went through different owners; but the pre-war pipes from Leeds are prized for their quality and English sophistication. This smaller bent apple shape is in excellent condition, but I’m guessing on the shape number. Approx. length 5 1/8". Bowl height = 1 9/16". Interior bowl diameter at top = 3/4:. Stamping has been worn. Clean and ready to enjoy.
